It’s Come and Gone

She’s one, just like that. I went to sleep on Thursday night and she was still a baby. Then Friday I woke up and she was a toddler. I struggle for the right words to express how I feel – excited, proud, sad, elated, curious and so much more. She’s such her own person now. She tells what she wants and what she needs. She is an exuberant child with a smile the explodes across her face. She is expressive and not shy. She demands attention. She is curious and eager. I am proud of what we’ve done and I don’t mean that in a boasting kind of way. We’ve done very little really. We’ve prepared an environment for her that encourages her curiousity and exploration. Beyond that we’ve just tried to always be patient and mindful and respectful of her. Oh, and we’ve loved her. But that’s all really. She has done all the rest.

She has figured out how to put one foot in front of the other. She has figured out how to drink from a cup by herself. She has figured out how to uncap the cat’s snacks. She has figured out how to put my rings on my fingers. She has figured out how to make us melt. She is just amazing.

I’m proud also to say that we hit the one year mark of breastfeeding. I won’t lie, I was always pretty confident that she and I could make it. I was more concerned about dealing with what others would have to say. Luckily, no one has really made a huff about it. And those who have brought it up are only excited to support us. We’re a lucky pair D and I.

There was no great party just a laid back evening grilling pizza on the BBQ. I couldn’t have asked for more. We know in the future we’ll have a bigger to do but this year we enjoyed the intimacy and slow pace of an evening with just a few friends and family.

I hate the cliche “time flies”. In the past I’d think, “Uh, yeah no shit.” No, it rings so true and makes me shudder. I don’t want the rest of her life to go by as fast as this past year. But I guess it must and since it will, I’ll gladly take it as long as it’s filled with as much love and excitement and wonder and joy as this past year.

Thanks, D, for the best year of my life.
