She Could Cure Things

The look on D’s face when she discovers something or just when she plays is beyond anything I’ve ever seen. It is concentrated and focused and determined and purposeful. I imagine that if I walked into a medical lab with scientists creating a cure for cancer, their faces would look much like D’s when she is discovering or playing. It’s this face that reminds me how important this stage in her life is. The stuff she pulls out of a basket, the zipper pull on my jacket, our cat, the fruit and veggies at the grocery store – all of it is momentous and amazing to her. It inspires me and leaves me speechless. It is her fierce concentration that oft times gives me the most stillness and joy in a day. I hope that I can always have the patience to foster her mad scientist face.
